Pediatric Dental Sedation in Upper East Side, NY

Children who are very young, have special needs, or who have a high level of anxiety that interferes with the cooperation necessary for the dentist to perform treatment may require some level of sedation. There are many safe and effective drugs available today that can help relax the child and promote a good environment for optimal and safe dental treatment.

Nitrous Oxide

Some children need more than good bedside manner and distraction to get through dental treatment.  We have nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas” or “sweet air”) at SLim Dental Kids.  Nitrous oxide is a safe, effective sedative agent for children who are mildly apprehensive.  Nitrous oxide does not put your child to sleep and is used to ease anxiety.  It enhances communication and is great for patients with gag reflexes that interfere with dental treatment.

Deep Sedation / General Anesthesia

Deep sedation is sometimes necessary for children that are unable, either due to age or apprehension level, to cooperate for dental treatment.

Sedation dentistry is most helpful for:

  • Infants
  • Children who require major treatment
  • Very anxious children
  • Children that have had traumatic dental experiences (sound and smell aversion)
  • Children with a strong gag reflex
  • Children who are medically compromised or have special needs
